Buyer's guide

What do Thread devices need?

A Thread border router, which is built into recent Apple TVs and HomePods, Nest Hubs, some Echo models, and SmartThings and Aqara hubs. With Matter, the device then shows up in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.

How accurate are these sensors?

Most smart sensors are within about 1°F and 3 to 5% relative humidity, which is fine for rooms, nurseries, and basements. For fridges, freezers, or reptile tanks, pick one with a probe or a stated tighter accuracy, and check it against a reference thermometer once.

What can I automate with one?

Turn on a fan or dehumidifier when humidity climbs, get an alert when a freezer warms up or pipes risk freezing, or let a smart thermostat average temperatures across rooms.

How long do the batteries last?

Most battery sensors on these lists are rated for one to three years, depending on how often they report. Low-power radios like Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread last much longer than Wi-Fi.
