Smoke only, or smoke and CO?

Put a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm on every level and outside sleeping areas if your home has gas appliances, a fireplace, or an attached garage. Smoke-only alarms are fine inside bedrooms.

Does a smart alarm replace a regular one?

Only if it's UL listed as a smoke alarm. A smart alarm adds phone alerts and interconnection, but the local siren is what wakes you up. Check the listing for UL 217 (smoke) and UL 2034 (CO).

Hardwired or battery?

If your home has hardwired alarms, replace them with hardwired smart alarms so they stay interconnected and code compliant. Battery models suit homes without wiring, and 10-year sealed batteries mean no yearly battery swaps.
