Buyer's guide

PIR motion or mmWave presence?

PIR sensors detect movement and are cheap with long battery life, but they think a room is empty when you sit still. mmWave presence sensors detect a person sitting still, so lights stay on while you read, but many need wired power.

How long do the batteries last?

Most battery sensors on these lists are rated for one to three years, depending on how often they report. Low-power radios like Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread last much longer than Wi-Fi.

Where should I put a motion sensor?

In a corner about 6 to 8 feet up, facing across the room rather than straight at the doorway. Keep PIR sensors away from heat vents and direct sun, which cause false triggers.
