Buyer's guide

Floodlight camera or regular outdoor camera?

A floodlight camera adds bright motion-activated lights, which light up a driveway or backyard and give color night video. It usually replaces an existing outdoor light fixture, so it's hardwired.

Do floodlight cameras need wiring?

Most mount on a junction box in place of an existing light. Some plug into an outdoor outlet, and a few run on batteries and solar panels, with dimmer lights.

Do I need a subscription?

It depends on the brand. Ring and Arlo keep recorded video behind a plan; eufy, Reolink, and some others record to local storage for free. Each listing's fee notes are in its pros and cons.
