A display adds a screen for cameras, recipes, calendars, and smart home controls. If you want to see your doorbell camera or control lights by touch, get a display. For music and voice only, a speaker is cheaper.
Some can. Several Echo Show models have a built-in Zigbee hub or Thread border router, and Google's Nest Hub (2nd gen) is a Thread border router and Matter controller. Check the listing if you want it to run your devices.
Most displays have a camera shutter and a microphone off switch. Put one with a camera in a kitchen or office rather than a bedroom if that bothers you.
